What is Oculoplastic-Reconstructive?

Looking your best and living your best life.

Our Oculoplastic eye surgeons focus on you, and offer many solutions for helping patients with excess eyelid skin, droopy eyelids or eyelids that turn inward or outward. We understand the frustration that changes to the eyes can affect your appearance, limit your vision and cause eye pain. Oculoplastic surgery helps reconstruct the area around the eye.

At Phillips Eye Center, we customize your oculoplastic surgery around you and use the latest techniques to address your own, personal goals. During your consultation, we’ll recommend the right approach and the right surgeon for helping you see better and look your very best. Our specialists Kristen Dunbar, MD and Brian Brazzo, MD, are board-certified Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgeons and experts in their field. Dr. Dunbar is a clinical instructor at New York University Medical Center where she trains ophthalmology residents and Dr. Brazzo is credited as one of the best New Jersey Oculoplastic Eye Surgeons in the area.

What are the different types of Retinal Disease?

There are many oculoplastic options available. The right treatment plan will be customized based on the results of your consultation and these treatment options.

  • Blepharoplasty

Blepharoptosis is often caused by a loosening of the tendon-like structure that lifts the eyelids, or by congenital malformation, trauma, muscular or neurologic disease. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, can improve the area around your eye and improve your overall appearance.

First our team works with each patient during a pre-surgical consultation, to understand their medical history and answer questions about vision, tear production, contact lens use, circulatory concerns, genetics and surgical needs. Once cleared for surgery, our expert team removes excess skin and fatty deposits on both the upper and lower eyelids.

Blepharoplasty corrects eyelid issues by removing puffiness and bags around your eyes and results in a younger, firmer, rejuvenated area around the eye, and helps with vision. Whether a patient is looking for functional, medical or cosmetic help, our highly skilled team is here and ready to help.

  • Botox Solutions

New lines, wrinkles on your forehead and crow’s feet can be frustrating signs of aging. From sun exposure to genetics to simply frowning or squinting, sometimes the muscles in our eyes become overworked. Botox is a safe, nonsurgical injection that blocks the impulses from the nerve to the facial muscle, and helps the skin appear smoother and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. Botox is a temporary solution for addressing these challenges, treating migraines and overactive sweat glands and can last 3 -5 months.

Botox® uses Botulinum Toxin, a treatment developed to help patients experiencing the visual signs of aging. This safe and effective procedure treats aging skin and reduces wrinkles. Botox® is considered the best non-surgical form of facial rejuvenation and produces phenomenal improvements in your appearance. Patients can usually return to normal activities immediately after the procedure, but should avoid too much exercise, applying cosmetics, or lying down for a minimum of 4 hours after the injections.

  • Entropion/Ectropion

Entropion occurs when the lower eyelid and eyelashes turn inward and cause the eyelid and lashes to rub against the cornea and conjunctiva. It’s most commonly caused by aging, infection or scarring on the inner surface of the eyelid, or due to eyelid injuries or tumors. Symptoms of Entropion include excessive tearing, eyelid crusting, mucus discharge, corneal irritation, sagging skin, impaired vision, redness, eye pain, sensitivity to light and foreign body sensation in the eye.

Ectropion occurs when the lower eyelid turns outward and doesn’t touch the eye, leaving the cornea and conjunctiva exposed, red and irritated. It’s most commonly caused by aging, undetected skin cancers or skin disease, trauma, scar tissue, facial nerve palsy or due to past eyelid or facial surgery. Symptoms of Ectropion include excessive tearing, eyelid crusting, mucus discharge, infection, corneal irritation, sagging skin, impaired vision, eye pain, sensitivity to light and poor tear drainage.
